Mar Roxas to lead LP starting Nov. 26

Sen. Manuel “Mar” Roxas II is poised to take over the leadership of the Liberal Party before the end of the month on high expectations he will lead one of the country’s oldest political parties back to the forefront in the 2010 elections.

The LP’s policy-making body, National Executive Council, is slated to meet on Nov. 26 to decide who will take the mantle from the incumbent president, Franklin Drilon, a former senator, whose term as party president ends on Nov. 30.

Roxas is affiliated with the Drilon wing of the party which has been split into two factions -- the other one being led by former Manila mayor Lito Atienza -- over the two leaders’ conflicting stance on President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo at the height of the “Hello Garci” scandal in 2005.

Drilon and those allied with him joined calls for the President’s resignation.
